We work with mission-driven, non-profit organizations that aim to effect positive change. For more than 30 years we have been working with these organizations to create experiences that challenge visitors to think about their place in this world.
If facts alone changed our behavior, nobody would smoke or overeat and we would all floss twice daily. Only when the effects of the behavior become personally relevant, do we really work to change it.
Successful projects require the collective wisdom and complementary skills of diverse teams. This can include architects, biologists, engineers, conservationists, artists, NGOs, community advocates, aboriginal peoples and even kids!

Maxine and Jesse Whitney Museum
The Maxine and Jesse Whitney Museum showcases the incredibly diverse collection that Maxine Whitney amassed from the 1940s to the 1970s. With no provenance or curator and a desire to show the collection in its entirety, this was an unusual project that demanded a unique solution. Our design approach unified the collection by taking visitors on a journey to see Alaska through Maxine's eyes, while touching on the larger story of making art, collecting, and representation.

National Maritime Centre
The concept for the National Maritime Centre of the Pacific and Arctic is unique because it is built on partnerships. Thanks to education and industry partnerships, it is integrated with the needs of the local maritime community, making it financially self-sustaining. A traditional museum model would not be the right fit so we developed an expanded maritime concept that includes community amenities, formal education and water-based activities to compliment the interpretive exhibits and displays.

River Landing
The Meewasin Valley Authority and the City of Saskatoon teamed up to revitalize their newly titled south downtown River Landing. AldrichPears Associates created an interpretive plan for the site. The two main goals of the interpretive plan were to provide a sense of place and to make connections to the city and the region, providing enough interpretive meaning and depth to make the site a key destination, rich in cultural, industrial and natural history.

Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center
This visitor center interprets the natural and cultural history of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. Few visitors ever see the Refuge's vast expanse of islands and shoreline. With this in mind, APA designed immersive experiences to explore the area, providing interpretive access to its population of some 40 million seabirds, oceanography, environmental monitoring and other human activity. The wet lab, classroom and trail system serve as part of a local environmental education program

Scorpion Ranch
Working with the National Park Service, APA provided exhibit planning and design services for a new visitor center and outdoor exhibits on Santa Cruz Island, where iconic Californian stories of human history, geology, biodiversity, conservation and the marine world converge. Throughout the project, we balanced the Park's desire for engaging exhibits, with the realities of operating a visitor center in a remote location exposed to the elements.

Ron
As cofounder of AldrichPears Associates, Ron brought an architectural expertise to the studio's operations that formed the foundation of our firm's design methods. That was over 30 years ago. Today, Ron is retired from the day-to-day activities at the firm so he can focus on hands-on community building. He still makes his presence known in the studio, weighing in on issues in his unique way-equal parts Louis Sullivan, George S. Patton and Dr. Seuss.

This is the list today. Tomorrow it will be different.

Victor
Victor grew up in culturally vibrant Cracow, and owes his unique creative lexicon to years of formal study and contribution within the city's rich art scene. His approach to exhibit design is very much informed by a multi-faceted artistic fluency and a deep understanding of the exhibit space as a confluence of stimulation and contemplation. Victor's designs orchestrate a balance between objects and space; moving and static images, sound and silence.

Richard
Richard discovered design through craftsmanship, during a journey that began the day his father handed him his grandfather's woodworking tools. As a design student, he was captured by the whimsy and humour in the work of Ettore Sottsass and Marc Newson, as well as the rationality and purpose underpinning the designs of Le Corbusier and Thomas Feichtner. Today, Richard finds inspiration in the world of interpretive design, creating exhibitions that inspire, educate, and challenge.

Sheila
Can you see the world in a grain of sand? Why is the sky blue? Can pigs fly? Curiosity is what drives Sheila. Particle physics, deep geological time, metropolitan dreams, avian flyways and gold rushes?it?s all her oyster when it comes to developing creative innovative concepts for exhibits. She likes to think big and then manage the work through to the last detail, because that?s where the devil lives...metaphorically, of course.

Brent
Brent is equal parts optimist and minimalist, which makes him naturally inclined to do more with less. He carried the 'less is more' mantra through a few years as an industrial designer before embracing story and illustration over object. His love of drawing, narrative and design met naturally in the world of exhibits. Today, Brent happily applies his 'less is more' standards to interpretive projects around the world that inform and inspire positive change.

Dan
Hergé had it right-end every page on a cliffhanger and achieve perfect harmony between script, illustration, type and layout. Somewhere in the heart of all that is the essence of storytelling. Dan decided early in life that he was going to be a writer because he couldn't draw, and climbed into the design world because of his undying admiration for those who can. He's been pursuing the essence of storytelling within exhibit environments ever since.

Born and raised in Northern England, Fiona came by her love of design naturally, growing up in a house with its very own design studio. Driven by an unquenchable affinity for exploring the world and telling stories, she fell in love with the idea of setting off across the Atlantic for the mountains and beaches of Vancouver. Once arrived, she immersed herself in the world of exhibit design, which allows her to draw, daydream, and tell stories inspired by the world around her every day.

Holding a trowel of rusty nails and rat bones, on a desolate penal colony on the rocky shores of Tasmania, Kate knew archaeology was not for her. She was blessed with a deep curiosity in history and a vivid imagination, and wanted the past to come alive for everyone, as it did for her. From that moment on, she purposefully and serendipitously plotted her course towards a career in sharing stories of the people, places and events that shape the world around us.

What you almost definitely don't know about Katie is that she's an avid piano player with a taste for the Russian composers, Rachmaninov above the others. This is a story about a girl named Yin and a boy named Yang. Yin was a dreamer. Yang, a diligent doer. Yin studied the arts; she wanted to know a little about a lot of things. Yang was an aspiring architect; he reveled in the details, in solving problems. Their paths met here, in this very studio. There were long discussions. She was a blue-sky thinker. Tom's guiding design principle is that 'content is king,' and he has, in fact, set designed more than a few kingdoms for film, television and exhibits. Tom is a trained graphic designer who combines an affinity for the visual with a craftsman's appreciation of object, a fully-stocked industrial designer's toolbox and years of experience. But content is king, and it's about getting to the heart of the story, about contributing to projects that make a difference, that keeps Tom inspired.

A few years ago, Vicky decided the best way to conquer her fear of risk-taking was to give up her editorial position at UBC, fly 4000 km to London, ON, and pursue an MA in Public History. Interrogators (a.k.a. well-meaning people concerned about her future) often reacted as follows: "Oh. What are you going to do with that?" Tell stories that matter, she'd quip. And tell those stories at AldrichPears, she'd dream. Vicky earned her MA and joined our team. The rest is history.
