American Memorial Park

American Memorial Park was created to honor the Americans and Mariana Islanders who lost their lives during the battle for Saipan in World War II.

The majority of visitors are Japanese, so it was particularly important that the interpretation of these tragic events appear unbiased. This was achieved by using archival photographs and oral histories wherever possible, allowing survivors to speak in their own voices. American servicemen, Japanese defenders, Okinawan and Korean farmers, and indigenous civilians all tell their own stories of pre-war life, the horror of the battle and its aftermath.

These pictures show the exhibits that Aldrich Pears designed to interpret the story of the Second World War battles fought on Saipan between American and Japanese forces. Through the use of historical photographs and artifacts the museum designers have created a compelling visitor experience that takes visitors back to the war as experienced by both sides and the indigenous people of Saipan.
