Taking visitors to the edge

Victoria's Open Range Zoo turned to AldrichPears Associates to help them create an interpretive experience that looked and felt like the real Africa. The goal was to give visitors insight into this unique environment, to experience lions first-hand and to gain a better understanding of the unique challenges facing lions and humans who live in countries such as Botswana.

APA responded with a design focusing on a visit to the fictional "Pula" reserve, located in open grasslands resembling Botswana. The adventure begins when visitors arrive at an accidental opening in a stone wall, which hints that they are leaving the nature reserve and entering an unprotected area. Along the way visitors discover the complex relationships between people and lions in the wild and at the Zoo.
